Relax and Unwind

Renovating your home doesn’t always mean starting from the inside. Sometimes, the biggest transformation can happen right outside your door. For me, creating an inviting outdoor living space became a personal project that not only added value to my property but also brought a little relaxation in my daily life. Let’s see how outdoor space can be turned into a beautiful and functional area that feels like an extension of your home or even an experiential environment.

Creating the Perfect Outdoor Living Space

Outdoor living spaces are more than just porches, patios or decks; they can be extensions of your home. My journey began with an old, falling apart deck. Removing the old deck was a necessary first step, but it’s also an opportunity to rethink how you want to imagine and use the space. The first task was disassembling the old structure using tools like a hammer, pry bar, drill, and screwdriver. Carefully and completely dissembling the deck was crucial to avoid leaving a chaotic mess and ensure that the space is clear for the new look.

Once the old deck was gone, I measured the area to figure out how the space could be maximized for a patio and garden. Dividing the space based on functionality helped me visualize the final product. One area would be for a grilling station , the next was for a comfortable lounging area, while the rest was left for plants and hardscaping. As you work through your space, think about how each section will serve its purpose (aesthetically and functionally) and be used by you and your family.

Planting: Bringing Nature Into Your Space

With the plan set, it is time to focus on the plants for the garden area. This is where you can really express your personality and style. I chose a blend of plants that were both visually striking and well-suited to the hard Virginia clay soil with lots of direct sun. Varieties like Knockout Roses, Japanese maples, lilies, and ferns added vibrant colors and visual focal points transforming my space into a welcoming oasis. When selecting plants, consider the amount of sunlight each area gets as some plants require more sun, while others thrive in shade. Take the time to plan and place your plants thoughtfully. I spent time digging sufficiently deep holes and ensuring that each plant was well cared for with proper fertilization and nurturing. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture and gives the garden a neat, polished look. Hardscape: Choices for Your Outdoor Space

Most outdoor spaces would not seem complete without the use of hardscaping. Hardscaping refers to the non-plant elements of your outdoor areas, like rocks, patios, stone paths, walkways, walls, and stairs. For my project, I chose stone as the predominate feature to create a durable, functional space that is also relatively inexpensive and easier to change and durable. To reinforce the perfect Zen atmosphere, I arranged pavers in a flower pattern throughout the patio, seamlessly blending with the garden theme. For the grilling area, I went for natural looking patio stones and connected them smoothly to the surrounding garden elements. When selecting your hardscape features, aim for colors, shapes, and sizes that complement each other to achieve a cohesive, welcoming look and to ensure your plants are not overwhelmed by the hardscape features– unless that is your intent.

The layout of your hardscaping should also enhance the flow of the space, and create visually discrete sections. For example, I included box stairs with no specific path, adding functionality and flexibility to the space while maintaining an open feel and flow from the indoor living area to the garden. Additionally, durability is key when choosing materials, so select options that can withstand weather in your geography. You might want to consider investing in high quality materials, like Trex decking, for low maintenance and durability. Also do not forget that permanent hardscaping features may require permits or be subject to other local zoning regulations (e.g., stair height and width).

In a Zen Garden, simplicity is key. By incorporating smooth stones, small plants, and a peaceful area, I crafted a space that encourages relaxation and mindfulness. This garden serves as a calming retreat where I can enjoy a peaceful moment, perfect for meditating, or sipping a drink while soaking up the outdoors.

Bringing It All Together

Once the plants and hardscaping were in place, I focused on the furniture. The space transformed when I added natural gray toned outdoor furniture, including a couch and two chairs that complemented the stone hardscaping. The cushioned seating created a comfortable, inviting atmosphere perfect for relaxation. To enhance the mood, I draped fairy lights overhead, adding a soft, magical glow that set the perfect mood for evening gatherings (check out Types of Bulbs or Using Lighting Effectively for more lighting ideas). The grilling area was strategically placed for easy access (and safety), for enjoyment during family barbecues. In the end, my outdoor living space became a true extension of my home. The Zen Garden, along with the chosen plants, not only elevated the aesthetic but also created a sense of peace and relaxation that everyone can enjoy in three seasons.

The Ultimate Transformation

Overall, a successful outdoor renovation can flip the feel of your entire property, making it more enjoyable and adding significant value. Whether you’re creating a Zen garden, updating your hardscaping, or adding plants that bring the space to life, the key is to consider every detail. With careful planning, a little hard work (and a good shovel!), and some creativity, your outdoor living space can become the perfect retreat for years to come. This just shows that anyone can create a unique and inviting space with a bit of effort So, what are you waiting for? Start the project you have been dreaming of!
